How to Spruce Up Your Front Entrance

Welcome Spring by Sprucing Your Front Entrance

Spring is just around the corner! People may be spending more time outside going for walks and socializing with neighbors. One great thing to do to feel pride in your home and switch to the Spring season is sprucing up your front entrance.

Here are eight tips to take the stoop from snoozing to stunning. Best of all, it won’t cost a ton.

  1. Trim

Paths should be trimmed and clear of any overhanging branches, encroaching shrubs or anything one can stumble over. The rule of thumb is for the path to be at least 3 feet wide so people can walk together, with an unobstructed view and no hazards. As long as the homeowner owns a pair of clippers, this should be no extra cost.

  1. Light

Adding light in the landscaping is practical as well as cosmetic. Lighting makes it easy to get to the front door at night and makes the path look better. Solar-powered LED lights stick in the ground, require no wiring and are surprisingly inexpensive. These are often sold in packs and can sometimes be found on clearance towards the end of summer.

  1. Color

A fresh coat of a bold color such as red or royal blue on a door will make a home stand out on the block. In Feng Shui, a red door means “welcome” and the front door is seen as the portal of energy. Painting the front door red would create welcoming energy. A small can of paint should be plenty for the door and can be saved for future coats of paint and touch-ups.

  1. Numbers

House numbers are often overlooked as an important feature of a home, but they actually make a big difference. Vinyl stickers come in a variety of fonts and can be a cheap and easy solution to making an address visible. However, it may be worth it to invest a few more dollars in nice metal numbers to place somewhere near the door.

  1. Mat

Another underdog of the front entrance is great welcome mat. While it looks great for company coming over, it is also practical. A good thick mat can be used for wiping muddy shoes and can be purchased for less than $50 at any local hardware or department store.

  1. Hardware

In addition to the color of a door, the door knob is also a detail that shouldn’t be overlooked. Polish the handle or replace it with a new brass set and a secure deadbolt, for safety and a fresh look. Majority of door handle sets are less than $100 and can be installed by the owner.

  1. Knock

Doorbells are more common today, but a sturdy, decorative knocker is a classic. Not only is it a focal point of the door, but it is also a way to showcase an owners personality. For example, someone who like boats or has a nautical themed home can put up a door knocker that looks like an anchor. Most door knockers run under $20.

  1. Green

Flower pots or flower boxes on either side of the door can be a nice touch and add a splash of color to the stoop. Just be sure to maintain the flowers or plant inside the pot.
